A while ago I wrote about one of my other passions in life, sewing. I highlighted a lot of the designs and clothes that I have made, but I have also recently branched out into a new area - making bags. Spurred on by the lack of interesting or affordable bags that I could buy for my job, I decided to make my own.
My first attempt was to make one using some fake leather - a basic, box type pattern with a flap and some nice lining. Using only my general skills and a quick Google search, I was able to turn out a pretty decent first effort.
From this experience, I realised I had a bit more to learn, but also caught the bug. They're very fun to make, quicker than some clothes and you don't have to worry how they fit! I then looked into some vintage style patterns using the types of materials I'm used to working with - woolens, tweeds, tartan etc. I found a wonderful Etsy store called Charlie's Aunt which makes great vintage patterns. My first attempt was this handbag:
From here I looked into new fabrics and techniques, as well as interfacings to strengthen the shape of the bags. This was a fun opportunity to try out more unique colour schemes and patterns. Here are some of them:
These were all really interesting and fun, and each was an opportunity to trial new techniques. I took some time to try them out, wear them around and enjoy matching them with different outfits.
My latest creation was my own design, again similar to box design of the first but with a few interesting additions and a fun pattern.
I am looking forward to making some of these to sell, potentially on Etsy - so if you're keen, let me know!
Thanks as always for following, see you next week!
These rule.
Yes, PLEASE! These are amazing! I love your sense of whimsy with the color and pattern choices.
I'm going to need one of these.
